First World Guitar Congress Set For June

Manufacturers, others to exhibit at Maryland event.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the first World Guitar Congress, to be held June 2-9 at Towson University in Towson, Md.

Dr. Helene Breazeale, executive director of the World Music Congresses and a professor of dance at Towson, says more than 50 exhibitors have signed on for the event. Exhibitors will include guitar, amplifier and string manufacturers; luthiers; and studios. The exhibition will be open to the public at no charge.

Legendary guitarist/inventor Les Paul will serve as the event's honorary chairman.

Among artists who will participate in the event are the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Dick Dale, Albert Lee, Pat Martino, John Scofield, Andy Summers, Eric Johnson, the Brazilian Guitar Quartet, Howard Alden, Jennifer Batten, Jimmy Bruno and Derek Trucks.

Corporate sponsors include the D'Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts, Maryland State Arts Council, Gibson Guitar Corp., Hard Rock Cafe and Comcast.
