Hamburg-based independent label Edel has struck an agreement to distribute V2 Records in Italy. V2 previously went through Sony Music in the territory.

The first release under the deal will be Paul Weller's "Studio 150," which is set for release Monday (Sept. 13). The agreement starts October 1 for catalog.

"We have decided that, with the merger of Sony and BMG, the time has come to pool our resources and create a genuine indie entity," comments V2 Italy managing director Alessandro Massara in a statement. "We believe that Edel is the only real distribution alternative to the multinationals."

Since it was founded by Richard Branson in 1996, V2 has expanded its network of affiliates into 15 markets. The company also has licensees in 30 countries. Its frontline artists include Stereophonics, Liberty X, Grandaddy and Elbow. In Italy, the labels' three key domestic acts are Giuliano Palma, Roy Paci and Sud Sound System.
