Sony's Gelb Named Met GM

Exec will join opera company in August.

Sony Classical president Peter Gelb has been named GM of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He will replace Joseph Volpe, who is retiring.

Gelb will join the Met on Aug. 1, 2005, and will work with Volpe during a one-year transition period. Gelb will assume the full functions of the GM on Aug. 1, 2006.

Gelb has headed Sony Classical since March 1995. His association with the Met dates back to his teen years, when he worked as an usher. In the early '70s, he did publicity work for the Met's ballet presentations; later, as president of CAMI Video, he served as executive producer for the Met's TV programs and oversaw its radio broadcasts. Sony acquired CAMI in 1993.
