Shoji Doyama has been named president of Tokyo-based label Toshiba-EMI, effective Jan. 27.
Doyama, previously executive VP of Tokyo-based BMG Funhouse, will report to Masaaki Saito, who is upped from Toshiba-EMI president to chairman/CEO. Saito will remain the company's representative director. The position of chairman had been vacant since Kenichi Toritsuka retired in June 2002; the CEO position is new.
"I am extremely happy to have Shoji Doyama within our management team," Saito says in a statement. "His skills and experience will be invaluable for us to continue to develop Toshiba-EMI."
Additionally, Makoto Shioya, senior managing director/CFO of Toshiba-EMI, is upped to the new role of vice chairman, also effective Jan. 27. He will continue to report to Saito.
A Toshiba-EMI spokesman says the exact division of responsibilities between Saito and Doyama has yet to be worked out. "Little by little, [Doyama] will expand his responsibilities," the spokesman says.
Industry sources suggest Doyama is being groomed to lead Toshiba-EMI when Saito retires.
Toshiba-EMI, a joint venture between Japanese electronics company Toshiba Corp. (45%) and EMI Music Group (55%), had a 12.2% share of the Japanese recorded music market in 2004, according to SoundScan Japan.
