Napster U.K. is cutting the price of its downloads. Starting today (Jan. 12), customers can buy individual tracks for £0.79 ($1.48); full album downloads cost £7.95 ($14.94). The prices are in line with those charged by Apple Computer's market-leading iTunes Music Store.
The price structure is intended to be in place ahead of the launch this quarter of the "Napster to Go" portable subscription service, which rolled out in the United States in September.
Initially, the new download price point is being offered to subscribers and to purchasers of Napster's pre-paid cards and branded vouchers; it will be made available to non-subscribers in the coming days. When Roxio launched its Napster U.K. affiliate on May 20, 2004, individual downloads were priced at £1.09 ($2.04).
The online music company has also reduced the price of download packages by about 20%. The new prices apply to Napster's entire catalog of an estimated 1 million titles.
"With Napster clearly on its way to success, we wanted to further fuel our growth with more attractive pricing and create an even broader appeal to music fans," VP/U.K. GM Leanne Sharman says.
