Universal, Telemundo On Board For Estefan Show

Label will award winner a record deal.

Universal Music Latino has signed a joint-venture deal with Estefan Enterprises for "Nuevas Voces de América" (New Voices of America), a TV talent show that begins airing Feb. 13 on the Telemundo network.

Produced and created by Estefan through his production company, CMR TV & Film, the two-hour show will air Sunday nights for 15 weeks.

Universal has pledged to sign the winner of the show to a record deal worth $250,000; this includes production costs and prize money. The label will also have the first option to sign other acts that appear on the show.

As "Nuevas Voces" unfolds, Universal plans to release at least two compilation albums featuring contestants, much like Spanish TV show "Operación Triunfo" did with its successful spate of releases on Vale Music. All titles will be jointly released under the Universal and Crescent Moon Records (which is owned by Estefan) banner.

Crescent Moon was previously a joint venture with Sony Music, a contract which expired at the end of 2004. Today, Estefan is working with various labels and producing several TV shows. His alliance with Universal, however, is specifically for all music-related elements of "Nuevas Voces de América."

The reality show will bring together 20 contestants, chosen from auditions held nationwide. The grand-prize winner will be determined by voting by the audience and celebrity judges. Estefan will act as a producer and coach for the contestants, overseeing their development.
