Latin Briefs: Molotov, Movistar, Hyphy

- Mexican rock group Molotov will play their legendary album, "¿Dónde Jugarán las Niñas?" in its entirety during their upcoming U.S. tour. Molotov's 19-city club and theater trek starts Jan. 16 at Chicago's Metro and wraps Feb. 8 at New York City's Irving Plaza. The band will play two sets per night, the first with hits from its 13-year career, and the second a full rendition of their controversial 1997 debut on Universal.

-The regional Mexican hyphy craze continues with the planned release by Fonovisa of a new group, 420, and its album simply titled "Hyphy" on Feb. 24. The accordion-based album was produced by the Twiins.

-As it had done previously in Spain and Colombia, wireless carrier Movistar announced the launch of its digital label in Chile. The Web- and mobile-based label allows artists to upload songs, videos and other content, and the most popular artists are selected for production and tour support and digital promotion by Movistar.

Simultaneously, the carrier announced the re-branding of Chile's Garage Music tour, which it sponsored last year, to the Movistar Musica tour. The free concert series features Sergio Lagos, Nicole, Lucybell, Los Jaivas, Javiera Parra y los Imposibles and Gonzalo Yáñez, among others. Local bands will join the headliners on stops, including Rancagua (Jan. 29), Concepción (Feb. 5) and La Serena (Feb. 12). Footage from the shows will also be made into a Canal 13 television series.

-Ex-Porter frontman Juan Son (aka Juan Carlos Pereda) will release his solo debut, "Mermaid Sashimi," in March on Universal Mexico. The major label distributed the last album of Juan Son's former group, Porter, which was on indie Tercer Piso. Universal Mexico senior VP of marketing and A&R Robbie Lear says Porter's last album has almost gone gold for Universal.
