IMPALA In 'Discrimination' Talks

Independent music body, IMPALA has met with European Commissioner (EC) for Culture, Ján Figel', to discuss the issues faced by independents in the online and mobile music market.

The private discussion took place at annual music trade show MIDEM and highlighted the principal concerns of discrimination and exclusion of independents in the sector.

IMPALA called for a specific chapter on small and medium enterprises (commonly referred to as SMEs in the European Union) in the Commission's forthcoming Green Paper on the Cultural industries, which would examine this discrimination and the barriers that currently exist for SMEs.

IMPALA also pushed the EC for a specific music program to be created by the Commission -- similar to the film sector's media program which co-finances training initiatives for the audiovisual industry -- and welcomed the creation of the member states cultural platform of coordination.

The final key point on IMPALA's agenda was the request to spread the French cultural initiatives, which include ten points of priority action for SMEs.
