Disclosure feat. Sam Smith
DENISE WARNER: Becky G’s “Shower” is cute, but “Latch” launched both Disclosure and Sam Smith into prominence. We have to give the advantage to the dance track over the pop earworm. My Vote: “Latch”
JOE LYNCH: There are very few songs that can stand up to Disclosure's retro dance earworm "Latch," featuring a star-making vocal from Sam Smith, and come out on top. Sorry, Becky G, but your "Shower" is not one of them. It's a promising start, but "Latch" is a dance masterpiece. My Vote: “Latch”
MAURA JOHNSTON: Disclosure’s collaboration with this year’s Most Emotive Man recalled a reworked-for-radio Hercules & Love Affair offering, while Becky G’s entry sounded like a hasty refresh — bass! Wordless bits grafted on to the chorus! — of a track left off one of Britney Spears’s earlier records. My Vote: "Latch"
WILLIAM GRUGER: While “Shower” was a much-needed summer jam this year, “Latch” finally breaking Disclosure into the mainstream was much better. Their debut album was amazing. My Vote: “Latch”
ALEX GALE: Becky G smartly left wanna-be raps behind for teeny-bop breeziness, and I’m fully on board with Dr. Luke’s 808-pop production. Including the lyrics “Singing in the shower” in a hook was an ingeniously self-fulfilling strategy. But I can’t get over Sam Smith’s vocal gymnastics on “Latch” or Disclosure’s 6/8 garage beat, and their unlikely journey to the Top 10. Smith can make as many mawkish Christmas songs as he wants — as long we get a song like this every few years, I’ll stay a fan. My Vote: “Latch”OVERALL WINNER: “Latch”
