Wiggle

Jason Derulo feat. Snoop Dogg

Turn Down for What

DJ Snake & Lil Jon

JAMIESON COX: I praised Derulo’s “easy debauchery” last round when deciding in favor of his other big hit this year, “Talk Dirty,” and “Wiggle” is more of the same. My mom watched him perform it live on So You Think You Can Dance and texted me in horror, which functioned to me as a sort of endorsement. There’s nothing easy about “Turn Down for What,” a song that depicts hedonism with a fervor and desperation that’s devoid of its competition’s comparatively flaccid come-ons. I don’t know my mom’s opinion of the latter, but I feel safe in saying that it’d send her into a tizzy.
My Vote: “Turn Down For What”

ERIKA RAMIREZ: Just when you think the world could not get enough of the term "turnt," Lil Jon takes it back to "turn" and creates a club anthem. No need to know the rest of the words to DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s collaborative track — knowing the title is enough. (Are there other words on the song besides those four?)
My Vote: “Turn Down For What”

NICK WILLIAMS: “Turn Down For What” just had such a huge moment in 2014 and brought Lil Jon back to his former glory. Its pelvic-thrusting video is just so outrageous that I have to bow down. It would have been safe to make a standard in-the-club visual, but they just took it to another whole level with that one.
My Vote: "Turn Down For What"

JEM ASWAD: Okay guys, is this a dumb-off? Arguably the most offensively stupid hit song of the year pitted against the biggest hit non-song of the year? “Wiggle” producer Ricky Reed practically owes the Neptunes a royalty for that beat, and the last thing 2014, anno bootiliciosus, needs is another butt anthem.
My Vote: “Turn Down For What”

ERNEST BAKER: "Wiggle" is a cute, novelty, Vine-friendly song. "Turn Down For What" is all of those things too, but it also has Lil Jon asking the greatest rhetorical question since, "What's love got to do with it?"
My Vote: “Turn Down For What”

KRISTEN YOONSOO KIM: Mad props to Jason Derulo and Snoop Dogg for attempting to make the word “wiggle” sexy, because honestly, all I can think about are The Wiggles. But in what has been dubbed the year of the booty, “Wiggle” is less than memorable. “Turn Down For What” is more of a boner jam than a booty one (just watch the video), but it sure as hell won’t be leaving our vocabulary for a while. Michelle Obama would approve of my choice…
My Vote: “Turn Down For What”

JASON LIPSHUTZ: I love everything about Lil Jon’s artistry, dearly missed him when his mid-00’s Moment passed, and was extremely satisfied when he returned in grand fashion in 2014. That sentence still works if you replace “Lil Jon” with the man who made his one-word catchphrases famous, Dave Chappelle.
My Vote: “Turn Down For What”
