Zella Day Discusses How Diet, Exercise Helps Her Deal With Rigors of the Road

As one of 2015's buzziest new artists, singer-songwriter Zella Day has spent much of the past year earning her stripes on the road in support of her impassioned, breakthrough debut LP, Kicker. The 21-year-old, who grew up in the mountains of Arizona, has dazzled audiences with her bohemian style and Southwestern-tinged pop-and-psychedelic folk tunes.

And for the rising, globe-trotting star, taking care of herself on the road has become paramount to her day-to-day tour life. "The bus is just a more controlled environment. Everything is foreign, you're in a different city, around new people," she tells Billboard. "Food can easily become a comfort."

Billboard, in collaboration with Silk's #DoPlants campaign, caught up with Day in Boston and chatted with the rising star about how her commitment to a plant-based diet of mostly fruit and veggies, along with daily exercise, allows her to deal with the rigors of the road.

"I  have a refrigerator that I stock every weekend with farmer's market stuff," she explains.   
"It's important to me to look the part as well as being the frontwoman, being healthy and confident. 

"Over the past year, my performances have become even more energetic than they started off being, and I'm more physical onstage. That's why I go running every day. I need the stamina. I need my lungs to fill up 100% so that I can sustain myself for the hour and a half that I'm playing.”
