The pair have been working on new music together, though gossip sites and fans have wondered if there is more to their relationship, thanks to suggestive photos posted by the duo on Instagram. As a result, Zedd tallied a 288 percent increase in searches for his name on Wikipedia in the week ending Jan. 18 (according to Next Big Sound). He also earned 81,000 new followers to his Instagram account -- an 88 percent rise over the previous week.
Women Rule Social 50's Top 10
In the four-year history of the Social 50 chart, there have only been two times where nine out of the top 10 artists were women -- and they both happened in the last two weeks. On the latest chart, dated Jan. 31, female artists occupy Nos. 1-4 and the 6-10 slots, with Justin Bieber the lone male in the top 10 (at No. 5). A week earlier, Bieber was again the only man in the region, but ranked at No. 2. (The Social 50 launched on Dec. 11, 2010.)
The all-women takeover of the top 10 follows a female domination of the Hot 100 last fall, as reported last October. Traditionally, on the Social 50 chart, male sololists like Bieber and Justin Timberlake populate the top 10, along with male groups like One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer.
Notably, only 17 acts have reached No. 1 on the Social 50, and just six of them were male soloists or groups with male members (Bieber, Timberlake, PSY, One Direction, the Black Eyed Peas and Skrillex).
"Shake It Off" -- Cop Edition
Over on the Streaming Songs chart, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" returns to No. 1 after a nine-week hiatus from the top slot, thanks to a viral video featuring a lip-synching police officer. A video of a Dover, Delaware, cop dancing and singing to "Shake It Off" has been viewed more than 22 million times globally on YouTube since its upload on Jan. 16. (An endorsement from Swift, who says the cop has "sass," helped drum up attention too.) In turn, "Shake It Off" surged 134 percent in domestic streams for the week, according to Nielsen Music.
This is the second week at No. 1 for "Shake It Off," after spending just one earlier week atop the list (dated Nov. 22, 2014).
