Meghan Trainor Tops Hot 100; Tove Lo Joins All-Female Top Five, Bobby Shmurda Hits Top 10
Led up by Trainor's 'All About That Bass,' women monopolize the top five for a record-extending sixth consecutive week, with Tove Lo's 'Habits (Stay High)' entering the region. Plus, Bobby Shmurda's 'Hot Boy' dances into the top 10.
Another week, another top five on the Billboard Hot 100 consisting entirely of women, as Meghan Trainor's Epic Records single "All About That Bass" leads an all-female top five for a record-extending sixth straight week. The run furthers the mark for the most weeks in a row that women have locked men out of the top five in the chart's 56-year history.
Joining the elite club is Swedish pop singer/songwriter Tove Lo, whose debut hit "Habits (Stay High)" rises 6-4.
Meanwhile, rap rookie Bobby Shmurda reaches the top 10 with his viral video-fueled "Hot Boy."
As we do each Wednesday, when the sales/airplay/streaming-based Hot 100 is compiled, let's look at the numbers behind the top 10 and more.
Beneath "Bass," Taylor Swift's former two-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Shake It Off" ranks at No. 2 for a sixth week; Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow" (featuring Rita Ora) holds at its highpoint (3-3), while leading Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rap Songs for a second week each; and, beneath "Habits," Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj's "Bang Bang" backtracks 4-5.
Minaj's "Anaconda" drops 5-8 after seven weeks in the top five. It reached No. 2 (marking her best Hot 100 rank).
Women, thus, account for the Hot 100's top five exclusively for a sixth straight week. The run distances that of a four-week stretch in 1999 (Feb. 13-March 6), when songs by Monica, Britney Spears, Deborah Cox, Cher, Brandy, Whitney Houston (featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price) and Sarah McLachlan combined to keep men out of the bracket. This week marks just the 12th week in the Hot 100's history in which solo women have excluded men from the top five.
"Bass" rules the Hot 100 thanks in part to its No. 1 rank on Streaming Songs for a sixth week, logging 13.4 million U.S. streams (down 3 percent), according to Nielsen BDS. It slips to No. 2 after six weeks atop Digital Songs (169,000 downloads sold, down 17 percent, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and to No. 2 on Radio Songs after three weeks at No. 1 with 146 million in all-format audience (down 1 percent).
As Swift's "Shake" ranks at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for a sixth week (after spending its first two frames at No. 1), the track crowns Radio Songs with a 2-1 jump (149 million, up 3 percent). Swift scores her third Radio Songs No. 1: "You Belong With Me" led for two weeks in 2009 and "I Knew You Were Trouble." topped the tally for four weeks in February/March 2013. As previously reported, "Shake" also reaches No. 1 on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart and leads Adult Pop Songs for a third frame.
"Shake" rebounds 2-1 for a fourth week atop Digital Songs (171,000, down 10 percent); rules the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart for a third week (4 million, down 3 percent); and holds at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (11.3 million, down 3 percent), its peak rank
Holding at No. 3 on the Hot 100, Azalea's "Black Widow" keeps at No. 3 on Radio Songs (127 million, up 5 percent); slips 7-8 on Digital Songs (77,000, down 13 percent); and falls 7-9 on Streaming Songs (5.9 million, down 10 percent).
Tove Lo's "Habits" rises 6-4 on the Hot 100 with across-the-board gains: it roars 8-4 on Digital Songs (99,000, up 12 percent); 6-5 on Streaming Songs (7.2 million, up 7 percent); and 10-7 on Radio Songs (90 million, up 16 percent).
Below "Bang Bang" at No. 5 on the Hot 100, Jeremih edges 7-6 with "Don't Tell 'Em" (featuring YG) (and is the top Hot 100 hit by a male artist for a second week!) The track bullets for a third week at its No. 4 high on Radio Songs (118 million, up 3 percent) and returns to the Digital Songs top 10 (11-10; 74,000, down 2 percent).
Maroon 5's "Animals" lifts 8-7 on the Hot 100 as the chart's top Airplay Gainer. On Radio Songs, it flies 33-20, up by 34 percent to 49 million in audience. "Animals" ascends 5-3 on Digital Songs (114,000, down 1 percent) and drops 9-10 on Streaming Songs (5 million, down 16 percent). Last week, the song was fueled by the Sept. 29 premiere of its video and Maroon 5's performance of it on NBC's Saturday Night Live (Oct. 4).
Minaj's "Anaconda" (5-8) and Sam Smith's fellow No. 2 hit "Stay With Me" (9-9) rank above top 10 newcomer Bobby Shmurda, whose "Hot Boy" bumps 12-10 for his first Hot 100 top 10 (in his first chart visit). Powered heavily by the song's accompanying "Shmoney Dance" (click here for helpful step-by-step instructions), the cut from the Brooklyn rapper, who first gained fans on Vine, climbs 4-3 on Streaming Songs (8.5 million, down 2 percent). It rises 25-20 on Digital Songs (50,000, up 5 percent) and nears Radio Songs with an 11 percent gain to 25 million.
While "Hot Boy" bullets at No. 8 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay with 18 million in format audience (up 3 percent), it's still a fair distance away from the Pop Songs airplay chart. The last rap song to reach the Hot 100's top 10 but not appear on Pop Songs (i.e., meaning it rose to the top 10 despite a lack of significant pop play)? Eminem's "Rap God," which debuted at No. 7 on Nov. 2, 2013, with nearly all its chart points from sales; it bowed atop Digital Songs that week with 270,000 downloads sold as a preview track from Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
Three other non-rap songs have since hit the Hot 100's top 10 without appearing on Pop Songs, thanks largely to combinations of sales and streaming, including Idina Menzel's Frozen theme "Let It Go," which heated up to a No. 5 peak in April.
