Peter Shukat, Music Industry Lawyer, Dead at 69

Peter Shukat, a quintessential New York music-industry lawyer, passed away June 7 in New York, after a long fight with cancer. He was 69.

Shukat, a name partner of New York-based Shukat Arrow Hafer Weber & Herbsman LLP, handled the estates of some of the world's best known performers including, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, John Coltrane and Miles Davis, as well as many artists including Yoko Ono, Al Di Meola and Marshall Crenshaw down through the years, according to various press reports.

Shukat "always defined himself in every room he entered," says one industry executive who often found himself negotiating across the table with him.

Shukat, who graduated from the Brooklyn Law School in 1969, has been a lecturer on the subject of music law at Syracuse University, The New School, Cardozo Law School and The Tulane University School of Law, and was an Adjunct Professor at Brooklyn Law School.

He is surveyed by his wife Yvette, daughter Jennifer, and his sons Josh, Michael and Justin (who is president of Primary Wave Music Publishing) and their spouses; and nine grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 11:00am, Temple Emanuel of Great Neck in Great Neck, NY.
