November 23: Liam Payne and pro wrestler Kurt Angle during One Direction celebrates 1D Day at YouTube Space LA in Playa Vista, California.

Following the leak of a video in which members of One Direction, on tour in Peru, can be seen smoking and talking about lighting joints, member Liam Payne has taken to Twitter, speaking out about the video's contents for the first time since the UK's Daily Mail posted the video on Tuesday.

One Direction Pot-Smoking Video 'In the Hands of Our Lawyers'

In a series of tweets posted earlier today (May 31), Payne referenced another Mail article that slammed the group for their irresponsibility and explained to fans that the "sideways" behavior depicted in the video—behavior that caused several of those fans to post photos of themselves burning One Direction concert tickets—was an inevitable side effect of the "extreme circumstance" of young stardom. The other One Direction members in the video, Zayn Malik (who filmed the video in question) and Louis Tomlinson, have remained silent on the controversy.

The group's publicist told the press Wednesday that "the matter is in the hands of our lawyers."
