Daft Punk Announce New Album ‘Random Access Memories,’ Release Date, Pre-Sale

After several weeks of teasing their new album, French electronic duo Daft Punk have announced the name of their fourth studio album Random Access Memories, as well as a pre-sale and an approximate release date. 

The band's rep sent out a terse press release early this morning (March 24) stating that, "Daft Punk's Random Access Memories is available early at itunes.com/daftpunk CD and Vinyl on randomaccessmemories.com” as well as a YouTube link to an amended version (below) of the group's rather cryptic commercial that aired during “Saturday Night Live" on March 2 with the title of the album and a throw to the iTunes pre-order.

While no firm release date was officially given, the band’s iTunes page says “Expected Release Date: May 21, 2013.”

Random Access Memories is the group's much anticipated fourth studio album and the follow-up to 2005’s Human After All. In 2010 Daft Punk, which consists of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, released the Tron: Legacy Soundtrack.

A number of prominent and disparate artists have been linked to the new album, including Nile Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, Panda Bear (a.k.a Noah Lennox of Animal Collective), Chilly Gonzales and Paul Williams. Daft Punk's reps would not verify the record's collaborators.

The album, as it appears on iTunes, lists 13 tracks and retails for $11.99. The randomaccessemories.com site plays the same filter-house loop heard in the SNL commercial and a link off the band’s helmeted alien logo (which appears after clicking on the band's logo) takes you to http://www.myplaydirect.com/daft-punk where vinyl and CD pre-orders can be purchased. The vinyl, which is a “180 gram double vinyl gatefold," retails for $39.98 and includes a digital album download code and an LP size booklet. The CD is being sold for $12.98.  

Random Access Memories is being released on the band's label imprint Daft Life Limited through Columbia Records.

Daft Punk announced a strategic alliance with Ultra Records earlier this year, the duo's 15-second "SNL" commercial was projected onto a building outside of the Ultra Music Festival in Miami on Friday night leading some to surmise that Daft Punk may possibly play the fest. Though similar conjecture arose at SXSW where a billboard was also erected.
