Olly Murs Owns U.K. Charts

Ask Olly Murs where he thinks 2013 will take him and the young singer, who won a nation of ears after parlaying his stint on the U.K. edition of "The X Factor" last year into No. 1s for his his album and its key single on the U.K. singles and album charts, eagerly uses words like "big" and "massive." Unabashedly, the 28-year-old Brit, whose debut U.S. album "Right Place, Right Time" will land in April and who visited Billboard for a two-song performance as part of our Next Big Things in Music video series, says he's now set his sights on conquering America and then the world. "Give it to me," he smiles, "I'm ready."

"In the U.K., I came from a talent show," says Murs, who Billboard.com recently named one of this year's 13 Artists To Watch. "I was watched by millions of people, so instantly when I came out from the show, people knew who I was. Whereas over here [in the U.S.], no one knows who I am. They're listening to 'Troublemaker' and 'Heart Skips A Beat' or my album and they're like, 'Okay, I want to get to know Olly.'"

And indeed, America is listening now. Murs's "Troublemaker," which features Flo Rida, is enjoying its second week on the Hot 100. Flo Rida's participation on the track came out of Murs desire "to get the best." "I knew that if we could get someone as big as him on the song it would be amazing for me, it would be a great boost across Europe and the world. But I also didn't want to just get someone because of their name. I wanted someone that was going to give something to the track. . . Flo Rida was the first person that came to mind. He loved the song, he wanted to be a part of it." He also says that the collaboration could bear even more fruit soon. Flo Rida, "wanted me to be a part of something he does in the future," Murs hints.

"2013 is a massive year for me internationally," Murs says confidently. With his album "Right Place, Right Time" set to be released around the world, his single "Troublemaker" climbing the Hot 100, and hints at extensive touring ("it's going to be nice to tour and see all the fans, travel the world"), Murs nods to his own album title in his feelings about the year ahead. "I'm in the right place at the right time," he says. "This is the right moment."
