BPI To Fight Web Retailers

Trade body takes legal action against pair of sites

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) is stepping up legal action against a pair of online retailers it is accusing of selling illegal parallel imports.

An ongoing case against U.K.-based online retailer CDWow is set to be heard in the High Court on Feb. 2. The BPI launched legal proceedings after test purchases made by its Internet investigation unit yielded suspicious results. According to the BPI, CDWow offers low-priced product originating outside the European Economic Area, without the consent of copyright owners.

The BPI has also launched proceedings against Jersey-based etailer Play.com, which it says operates on a similar basis. No court date has been set.

The BPI also says it has begun preliminary testing of product from Amazon.com but, contrary to published reports, has not yet launched an official investigation.
