Gorfaine/Schwartz, IMG Artists Form Alliance

The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency, a leading talent agency for composers, songwriters and music supervisors in film and television, has entered into a strategic alliance with IMG Artists, a performing arts management and booking specialist, to cross-promote each other's acts.

Under terms of the deal, Gorfaine/Schwartz will help place IMG's classical roster in film and television projects, while IMG will help Gorfaine/Schwartz composers explore touring opportunities for their music.

Michael Gorfaine and Samuel Schwartz, partners and co-owners of The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency, Jeff Fuhrman, president and COO of IMG Artists and Elizabeth Sobol, IMG Artists' senior vice president and associate director, will oversee the initiative.

Gorfaine/Schwartz clients include John Williams, Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Ennio Morricone, Thomas Newman, James Horner, Mike Post, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. IMG Artists represents Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, The Bolshoi Ballet, Renée Fleming, The Joffrey Ballet, Anna Netrebko, Sir James Galway and Pilobolus among others.

Initial projects under the relationship include IMG-booked international tours for Gorfaine/Schwartz acts Dave Stewart and Eric Idle. Stewart is presenting the “Dave Stewart Songbook" with a backing band and a 30-piece orchestra. The show will feature songs he has co-written and/or performed with Annie Lennox (his longtime partner in Eurythmics), Mick Jagger, Gwen Stefani, Bono, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, The Neptunes, Beyonce, George Harrison and Joss Stone.

Meanwhile, Idle is touring behind "Not The Messiah,” an oratorio based on Monty Python's "The Life of Brian" he has developed in conjunction with "Spamalot" partner John Du Prez.

Also in the works are select concert presentations based on the upcoming movie "August Rush" which features music from John Legend, Chris Botti, Hans Zimmer, Mark Mancina and John Ondrassik.

"IMG Artists' global presence will allow our clients new channels of distribution to present their works to live global audiences in innovative ways," says Gorfaine.

No IMG Acts have been placed in film projects yet, but discussions are underway.

"For artists who simply play classical repertoire on classical stages, it is very difficult to sustain those careers anymore. A handful of people do it, but it has become more and more difficult," Sobol tells Billboard.biz. "Everybody is scrambling for different ways to get in front of the public. Film and television is clearly a way to go. Things can change for a classical musician when they are given opportunities in front of a wider public."
