Aguilar will receive the Billboard Musical Legacy Award, in recognition of a career that has influenced the genre and its artists. Aguilar was recently honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, next to the one honoring his father Antonio Aguilar. With global sales exceeding 12 million copies of his albums, Aguilar has brought mariachi to a new generation. He has created an online talent contest to promote the music's future by finding "El Rey del Mariachi."
The legendary banda music group La Original Banda El Limon de Salvador Lizarraga will be honored with the Excellence Award, presented to an innovative artist or musical group that has remained at the forefront of music, changing, renewing and transforming themselves in order to remain successful. Originating in the mid-'60s and led by clarinetist Salvador Lizarraga Sánchez, the 17-member band has featured some of Regional Mexican music's most popular vocalists and songs, like "Qué se te olvidó," which remained for 29 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.
3BallMTY, Pepe Aguilar, Julion Alvarez y su Norteno Banda To Perform at Billboard Mexican Music Awards
The Norteño music institution Los Huracanes del Norte will receive the Voice Award, given to an artist or musical group with a distinctive and unique on and off-stage persona. Los Huracanes del Norte is one of the most emblematic Norteño musical acts, with a 40-year career during which they have produced 63 albums and participated in 21 feature films. They have received widespread recognition for their music and for their humanitarian work.
The three recipients of this year's Billboard special awards will perform on the awards show, joining previously announced musical acts Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Conjunto Primavera, 3BallMTY, Yuridia, Julion Alvarez y su Norteño Banda, America Sierra, Smoky, Los Primos de Durango, J-King y Maximan, Pesado, Duelo, Roberto Junior y Su Bandeño, Horacio Palencia, Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez and Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles.
Awards host Marlene Favela, one of People en Español's 50 most beautiful People, appeared in the original Telemundo productions of "El Zorro" and "Los Herederos Del Monte." She will be joined by Rafael Amaya, one of telenovelas' favorite leading men, who starred in Telemundo's "Alguien te Mira" and "La Reina del Sur."
The awards show is preceded by the red carpet special La Alfombra de los Premios Billboard de la Música Mexicana presentado por State Farm, which will be hosted by TV personalities Azucena Cierco and Monica Noguera, with Guadalupe Venegas from mun2 as Backstage Host, and People en Español's Fashion and Beauty Director, Kika Rocha, as guest fashion commentator.
