Camila Cabello hit fans with a promised powerhouse double-dose of new music on Thursday morning (Sept. 5), dropping the tracks "Shameless" and "Liar" at the same time.
Marking Cabello's first solo release(s) since 2018, the contrasting tunes present very different vibes, with the intensely personal "Shameless" chugging along on a rock-ish guitar and a spare, clicking beat while "Liar" is an explosion of hip-swaying Latin rhythms, bright horns and reggae-like strumming.
"So many mornings I woke up confused/ In my dreams I do anything I want to you/ My emotions are naked they're taking me out of my mind/ Right now I'm shameless/ Screaming my lungs out for ya," Cabello sings in an emotional, urgent voice on "Shameless" before ominous beats creep into the song about wanting someone so bad it hurts and pleading with them to surrender.
The Henry Scholfield-directed video for "Shameless" amps up the song's urgency, flashing between scenes of Cabello crawling across the floor of an empty mansion, burning with desire in a church confessional and eerie scenes of an army of red-dressed Camilas doing a choreographed dance in the sand.
The similarly love-obsessed, jazz-inflected "Liar" has a lighter touch, adding in some bouncier vibes, even as Cabello stays laser-focused on her obsession. "I said I won't lose control, I don't want it/ I said I won't get too close but I can't stop it/ Oh no, there you go making me a liar/ Got me begging you for more/ Oh no there I go, startin' up a fire," she sings, sounding okay with possibly getting burned.
“These songs are basically the story of my life the past couple years and the stories I’ve accumulated - I knew for a long time I wanted my album to be called Romance because these stories are about falling in love," Cabello said in a statement about the songs. Cabello will perform on Saturday Night Live for the first time on Oct. 12.
