Electro-pop singer Wafia has signed to Atlantic and Rodeo Records, the former label's new joint venture with super-producer John Hill, Billboard can exclusively reveal.
A Grammy-nominated producer and songwriter, Hill has worked across the genre spectrum on tracks including Demi Lovato's "Tell Me You Love Me," Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still," and multiple hits for Shakira. Rodeo Records, he says, is a new way to share his eclectic tastes with the world.
"The thing I enjoy most about working with artists is helping them tell their unique stories in ways that connect with their fans and excite and inspire new ones," he says. "I started Rodeo as a music-first label to work with artists that inspire me as people, whose work ethic makes me work harder, and whose art is a reminder of why I do this in the first place. Our first signing, Wafia, is all these things and I can’t wait for people to hear her story."
Hill adds that he wanted to work with Atlantic after watching the label "develop artists into global superstars on their own terms." Similarly, with Rodeo, he wants to encourage artists to be themselves.
“There is no point in asking people to be something they are not," he says. "Ideally, I’d like to have a home where my favorite artists, songwriters, musicians, and producers can collaborate across each other’s projects in as free a way as possible, so we can make music that otherwise wouldn’t exist."
Wafia, 26, turned heads in 2018 as the vocalist for Louis the Child's bubbly hit "Better Not." The track was certified Gold by the RIAA, and has raked in more than 126 million streams on Spotify. Now based in Los Angeles after growing up in Australia, she has built on that following with releases like positivity anthem "I'm Good," which Hill produced, and "Hurts," her latest collaboration with Louis the Child which also features Whethan.
To celebrate her signing to Atlantic and Rodeo Records, Wafia is releasing her new single and music video "Flowers & Superpowers" today (Oct. 24). Meanwhile, she's working on an EP and hitting the road with Electric Guest on select dates of their current world tour.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be starting this new chapter with John and Atlantic," Wafia shares. "I feel in such good hands. We create so well together and I’m excited to see where the music takes us.”
