Mellencamp Tour To Coincide With New Album

Comments

Fresh off of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall last month, Indiana rocker John Mellencamp will embark on a month-long summer tour in support of his forthcoming album "Life, Death, Love and Freedom," due July 15 via a label to be announced.

The trek begins July 8 at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia, and is scheduled to wrap Aug. 2 at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Calif. Mellencamp has tapped Lucinda Williams as support for most of the tour.

Ticket on-sales begin later this month and early May in various markets. As in past years, members of Mellencamp's fan club will be given early access to premium tickets and concert packages via the artist's Web site.

Mellencamp previewed songs from "Life, Death, Love and Freedom" while on tour last year. In December, Mike Wanchic, who's been playing guitar with Mellencamp since 1976, told Billboard.com that the new album is "very, very, very organic -- upright basses, cocktail (drum) kits, lots of acoustic guitars, really very atmospheric, absolutely one of the coolest sounding records that I've ever heard, of ours or anybody else's."

In related news, the Mellencamp/Stephen King musical "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County," details of which were first revealed by Billboard in 2000, will finally open in April 2009 at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre. Mellencamp wrote the score, while King wrote the script.
