As the Detroit 300th birthday party nears, details of the July 20-22 music events at the city's Hart Plaza are taking shape. As previously reported , Stevie Wonder will headline the July 21 "Sounds of Detroit Celebrity Homecoming Concert." Joining Wonder will be Motown greats the Temptations, country singer Anita Cochran, jazz group Take 6, and comedians Tim Allen and Dave Coulier. Comedian David Alan Grier will host the event.
The night prior will see "Jazz Detroit: Swing, Bop & Beyond." The evening will feature more than 20 artists, and be headlined by Della Reese. July 22's "Sounds of Detroit" musical finale will see an 800-voice gospel choir led by the Rev. Edgar Vann of Second Ebenezer Baptist Church performing with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Other artists from a wide range of genres that will take the stage through the weekend include doo-wop vets the Reflections, early Motown stars the Contours, "urban folk" music produced by Sista Otis and the Traveling Folk Revue, traditional folk by Matt Watroba, and a dual DJ jam by Kevin Saunderson and D Wynn.
The full July 19-25 tri-centennial party -- which is chaired by Edsel B. Ford II, and will celebrate Detroit's official birthday on July 24 -- will also include several other events. The first is Sail Detroit, a weeklong presentation of 23 tall ships docked on the Detroit River, and includes the Ford Parade of Ships on July 22.
July 20-22 will feature "Cadillac's Landing: A Birthday Celebration of Detroit and Its People," which will recreate Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac's landing at Hart Plaza, the place the city began. The permanent installation of a statue of Cadillac will be unveiled during the event. The July 25 "Spiritual Day" in Chene Park -- which will bring together 3,300 congregations and 120 denominations -- will conclude the Motor City celebration.
