When former Crowded House/Split Enz principal Neil Finn decided to put a group together for a slate concerts in his New Zealand homeland earlier this year, he aimed high. The result was a backing band that featured former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, and Radiohead drummer Phil Selway and guitarist Ed O'Brien, among others.
Those not lucky enough to catch the five shows Finn and company performed at the historic St. James Theatre in Auckland in April will be able to hear the all-star outing on "7 Worlds Collide," due Feb. 26 from Nettwerk America. Others who joined Finn on stage are his brother Tim, his son Liam's band Betchadup, and multi-instrumentalist Lisa Germano, one-time fiddler in John Mellencamp's band.
The 17-song set includes material from all aspects of Finn's career -- Crowded House ("Weather With You" and "Don't Dream It's Over"), Split Enz ("I See Red" and "Stuff and Nonsense"), his pairing with brother Tim as the Finn Brothers ("Angels Heap" and new song "Edible Flowers"), and solo ("Loose Tongue" and "She Will Have Her Way"). Also featured are renditions of the Smiths' "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" and Pearl Jam's "Parting Ways."
Several songs on "7 Worlds Collide," namely "Anytime," "The Climber," and "Turn and Run," are from Finn's latest solo album, "One Nil." Released internationally earlier this year, the set is due for a late April release on Nettwerk in North America. It will include at least two additional songs that the artist is currently recording, according to a label spokesperson. "One Nil" features guest appearances by Germano, Sheryl Crow, Wendy & Lisa Melvoin, and Jim Keltner, and was produced by Finn with Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake, both of whom have worked on numerous releases with the artist in the past.
A live DVD release culled from the New Zealand shows is also due at the same time. That title features the same 17 songs as the CD version, plus more songs from "One Nil," as well as various Finn-related releases, including Crowded House's "Fall at Your Feet" and "Private Universe," and Split Enz' "History Never Repeats."
Finn is expected to tour the U.S. in the spring.
