Contemporary metal act Static-X will be the subject of an upcoming sci-fi action adventure comic book. Due July 24 from Chaos! Comics, "Static-X #1" will find the band's members -- Wayne Static, Ken Jay, Tony Campos, and Tripp Eisen -- recast as cybernetically enhanced enslaved workers for the State, which rules the world.
The comic book will come packaged with an exclusive CD. The enhanced disc will feature "Black & White," recorded live during the band's stint on last year's Family Values tour, a live music video of "Get to the Gone," and interview footage of the band.
Chaos! publisher Brian Pulido wrote the story for "Static-X #1," which will be illustrated by artist David Brewer ("Incredible Hulk," "Evil Ernie") and colorist Jay Fotos ("Spawn"). The edition will be released with three separate covers -- a photo cover, an art cover, and a collector's edition cover with the bands autographs superimposed in foil lettering.
Static-X was heavily involved with the development of the story, according to a Chaos! spokesperson. The band, which had 100% approval of all aspects of the project, visited the company's offices in Scottsdale, Ariz., to discuss the plot and how the members were to be depicted in the comic book. Pictures of the band's visit to the offices are on the Chaos! Web site .
Closer to the release date fans will be able to pre-order the comic book directly from the company's site. Chaos! Comics also encourages using the Comic Shop Locator Service (1-888-COMIC BOOK or csls.diamondcomics.com ) to identify local retailers who will carry the issue.
This is not the first time Chaos! has worked with a band to produce a comic book. In 1997, the company introduced "The Cryptic Writings of Megadeth" series, which interpreted the band's songs into comic book form. Chaos! also publishes a series of Insane Clown Posse comics (each of which come with an exclusive CD single), and has also marketed action figures of the group. The spokesperson says that the company is currently negotiating with other artists for future projects.
Static-X recently wrapped a weeklong Mexican tour supporting Korn. According to its official Web site , the band is planning a set of radio station-sponsored festival appearances in the coming months, and is in the midst of formulating international and summer tour plans. The only currently confirmed date on its itinerary is a March 30 appearance at La Luna in Riverside, Calif.
As previously reported, Static-X has contributed songs to the soundtracks of "Queen of the Damned " and "Resident Evil ," and recently recorded "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" for the upcoming Rob Zombie-produced Ramones tribute album . Two of the band's tracks -- "Cold" and "Push It" -- will appear on Elektra's "Family Values Tour 2001 " album due out in May.
The band's latest Warner Bros. album, last year's "Machine," debuted at No. 11 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 328,000 copies in the U.S. to date, according to SoundScan.
