ABBA's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus were among the nominees announced today (May 6) for this year's Tony Awards. The duo and Martin Koch were nominated in the best orchestrations category for their work on the ABBA-themed musical "Mamma Mia!" The hit show is also up for best musical and best book of a musical (Catherine Johnson), while the show's Louise Pitre is up for best actress-musical honor, and Judy Kaye for the best featured actress-musical award.
Pop crooner Harry Connick Jr. received a Tony nomination for best original score for his music and lyrics for "Thou Shalt Not." His debut Broadway work will be competing against "Sweet Smell of Success" (Marvin Hamlisch, music; Craig Carnelia, lyrics), "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (Jeanine Tesori, music; Dick Scanlan, lyrics), and "Urinetown the Musical" (Mark Hollmann, music; Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis, lyrics).
Vanessa Williams is nominated for best performance by a leading actress in a musical for her role in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods." Williams and Pietre ("Mamma Mia!") will vie for the honor along with Sutton Foster ("Thoroughly Modern Millie"), and Nancy Opel and Jennifer Laura ("Urinetown the Musical").
"Thoroughly Modern Millie," the tale of an ambitious 1920s flapper in search of a wealthy husband, leads the field with 11 Tony Awards nominations, while the fairy tale musical "Into the Woods" and "Urinetown" each received 10. Also notable is a best play nomination for "Topdog/Underdog," which currently stars rapper Mos Def in one of the show's two lead roles. His co-star, Jeffrey Wright, is up for the best actor in a play honor.
Winners will be announced June 2 in a nationally televised broadcast from Radio City Music Hall that will air live beginning at 8 p.m. ET on PBS, then switch to CBS at 9 p.m. ET.
