Independent label Incidental Music is preparing a tribute to legendary songwriter Kris Kristofferson, "Nothing Left to Lose," for an Oct. 8 release. The set will be the second indie compilation to honor Kristofferson this year, following the release of "Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down" on the Jackpine Social Club label earlier this summer.
Some of Kristofferson's best-known tunes are covered on "Nothing Left to Lose," with contributions from Handsome Family ("Sunday Morning Coming Down"), Rebecca Gates with Califone ("Nobody Wins"), Calexico ("Casey's Last Ride"), Radar Brothers ("Help Me Make it Through the Night"), Grandaddy ("Best of All Possible Worlds"), and Creeper Lagoon ("Why Me"). All songs were recorded exclusively for the album.
The new compilation boasts a bulk of the same Kristofferson compositions featured on "Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down," which featured contributions from Tom Verlaine ("The Hawk"), X's John Doe ("Me and Bobby McGee"), Hannah Marcus and Mark Kozelek ("Lights of Magdala"), and John P. Strohm ("Nobody Wins").
Kristofferson has had a long recording career, which continues to this day, though his biggest successes have been as a songwriter. His highest-charting album was his sophomore Monument set, "The Silver Tongued Devil and I," which hit No. 21 on the Billboard pop albums chart in 1971. But many of Kristofferson's songs, including "Me and Bobby McGee," "Help Me Make it Through the Night," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and "For the Good Times," have been taken to No. 1 by other artists.
