Keith Caulfield answers readers' questions about the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jody Watley, and Journey.
BY THE WAY...
I just love the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, "By the Way." I was wondering how many copies that album has sold. Also, how many copies have all their other albums have sold since 1991 (when SoundScan began)?
Spring Grove, Ill.
So far, the Red Hot Chili Peppers "By the Way" set has sold 1.5 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Warner Bros. album debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 in July 2002.
The band's current single, "Can't Stop," reached No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart on March 8. It is the group's eighth No. 1 on that tally -- more than any other artist.
Here is a list of all of the Peppers' SoundScan-era titles and how much each has sold: 1991's "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" (4.4 million), 1992's "What Hits?" (1.5 million), 1994's "Out in L.A." (126,000), 1995's "One Hot Minute" (1.7 million), and 1999's "Californication" (5 million).
MIDNIGHT WITH WATLEY
I'm a real big fan of Jody Watley, and I would like to take this time to ask if you think her new CD "Midnight Lounge" will do well in the States. It is a great CD. Jody doesn't get the recognition she deserves -- her music is very positive. [It's] about love, respect, and unity.
Jody Watley is back with an independent release, "Midnight Lounge." The album - which was previously issued overseas -- is expected to debut this week on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.
The new album is Watley's first U.S. studio set since 1995's "Affection," which has sold 43,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Since then, she released a 1996 American greatest hits album, and three studio efforts available only outside the U.S. -- 1998's "Flower," 1999's "Saturday Night Experience," and 2001's "Midnight Lounge."
Watley's last two significant showings on any of Billboard's singles charts were both with tracks from "Flower": "Off the Hook" hit No. 1 on Hot Dance/Club Play list and was a top-40 single on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. The follow-up, "If I'm Not in Love," reached No. 2 on the Club Play chart. Ironically, Atlantic, her U.S. label at the time, cancelled the domestic release of the "Flower" album.
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
Can you tell me if it is true or not? Is Steve Perry of Journey dead? Or did he just go off on his own when the new singer took over?
Steve Perry is most certainly not dead. Due to health reasons, Perry opted to let Journey go on its ... uh ... "journey" without him. The band's new singer, Steve Augeri, debuted as the frontman on the group's 2001 album "Arrival." Perry's final studio set with the group was 1996's "Trial by Fire." The group's most recent release was the independently distributed four-song EP, "Red 13." The disc was issued late last year.
Journey will head out on the road this summer with Styx and REO Speedwagon for the "Rockin' the Arena" trek. For further information on the band, visit its official Web site at journeymusic.com .
