The songwriting talents of John Hiatt will be celebrated on an upcoming multi-artist tribute set due May 13 from Vanguard Records. "It'll Come to You - The Songs of John Hiatt" will feature 13 of the artist's songs interpreted by a cast that includes Eric Clapton and B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, and Nick Lowe, among others.
Three of the songs have been newly recorded, while the rest have been collected from previous releases, all personally selected by Hiatt over the past two years. The new recordings come from Patty Griffin ("Take It Down") Buddy & Julie Miller ("Paper Thin"), and Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise, who reproduce the set's title track, "It'll Come to You."
"I think he's an expert at getting the real stuff in there," Griffin said of Hiatt's songwriting in a statement. "Tears, laughter, confusion, joy, loneliness -- all that and more in a style that makes you feel like you just had the most amazing time hanging out with one of your best friends."
Among the previously released songs is Clapton and King's version of "Riding With the King," utilized as the title track of their 2000 Reprise collaboration. Also included is Bonnie Raitt's take on "Thing Called Love," which was a No. 11 hit on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 1989. It was originally included on her Capitol album "Nick of Time," which won the 1989 album of the year Grammy award..
Vanguard's Web site is previewing one new track from the album each week leading up to its release, with the Raitt and Bradley songs already available for sampling.
Hiatt will release a new album, "Beneath This Gruff Exterior," May 6 through New West Records. The set will be his third with his band the Goners, and first for New West. Produced by Hiatt and the Goners with Don Smith, the set was recorded live in the studio. "We really just wanted to go in and get to the nuts and bolts of what this quartet does," Hiatt said in a statement. "If you come hear us live, this is pretty much what you get."
As previously reported , Hiatt performed last week at Austin's Club Deville during the South By Southwest music conference. An extensive tour in support of "Beneath This Gruff Exterior" is expected.
