2001 - The world's oldest active conductor, Takashi Asahina, the musical director of the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra dies at the age of 93.

2000 - John Michael Montgomery suffers a compound fracture to his right leg when he slips and falls through ice while hunting near his home in Nicholasville, Ky. The singer is taken to Baptist Central Hospital in Lexington, Ky., where he undergoes surgery.

1996 - Famed French singer and songwriter Mireille dies at the age of 90 after a lengthy illness.

1982 - Jamaica issues a Bob Marley commemorative stamp.
