Currently out on the road with emo poster band Dashboard Confessional, it's hard not to lump Brand New in with that scene. And while it can't be a bad thing to be identified with such a quickly rising star, the band is also striving to establish itself independently.
"It's good to a point, because it gets your name out there, and being labeled definitely helps," Brand New drummer Brian Lane tells Billboard.com. "But when you start grouping yourself with other bands and people it kind of loses its sense of individuality and we don't want to lose that.
"I'm not saying we don't like people or anything," he hastily adds. "But we're definitely trying to pull away from other bands and do our own thing and hopefully it will work out and we hope that people will accept it for what it is and grow with us as far as us as individuals in a band as opposed to us in a band in a group of other bands."
The band -- which is rounded out by singer Jesse Lacey, guitarist Vin Accardi and bassist Garrett Tierney -- has been making a name for itself with its second album, "Deja Entendu" (Triple Crown/Razor & Tie), and finding fans out on the road.
"It's pretty amazing when you play songs and hear kids sing louder than you," Lane says. "It's the best feeling in the world. It's been going really well."
Released in July, the album debuted at No. 63 on The Billboard 200. It has sold 133,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Lane says that opposed to the band's first, 2001's "Your Favorite Weapon," a lot of time and concentration went into making the new album.
"Jesse wrote a lot of the lyrics about different things than 'I just broke up with my girlfriend' for the new record," he says. "The second record was written in the year and-a-half or two years we were touring off of that first record. All of us got exposed to a lot of different music that all of us were listening to. For the first one we weren't in such close quarters for 24 hours a day. I think that has a lot to do with it."
Brand New has reportedly been at the center of a bidding war among major labels. "I wouldn't say it's a bidding war," Lane modestly protests. "There's a few labels that are definitely interested. We've been talking to a lot of people for a while and we're narrowing it down."
In response to report that the band had signed with DreamWorks, Lane says, "We're looking into a couple labels, they're definitely top of the list, but we have not signed anything yet. We hopefully will within the next month, but we definitely have not signed any contracts, unless the band did it behind my back!"
Once the deal is done, the band has tentative plans to work on its third album in the first half of 2004.
"We want to kind of keep this momentum going," Lane explains. "We're going to try to get back in the studio by March or April. We want to do that, whether it works or not will be another story. When we do sign to another label, too, they're going to help out with this record, so you never know what might happen."
And although a major label deal and a third album are on the horizon, and the band's recent television debut on ABC's "The Jimmy Kimmel Show," it's the being pegged as an act to watch in Rolling Stone's annual "Hot Issue" that has got the members of Brand New juiced at the moment.
"Me and Jesse we sit there and open the magazine like four times a day," Lane says, laughing. "And it's like 'Britney Spears [on the cover], us! Britney Spears, us!'"
Brand New will be touring with Dashboard Confessional, MxPx and Vendetta Red through early October. A headlining club tour kicking off Oct. 30 in Washington, D.C. will follow.
"I love it," Lane says. "We've been touring for the last year and-a-half anyway and that's the reason that we're doing this."
