On the heels of the recently announced "Songs for Sudan " downloadable benefit album, Waxploitation Records is eyeing a late November release for another collection to benefit the war-town African country. "Genocide in Sudan" will boast previously unreleased or rare tracks from Tom Morello's Nightwatchman project, Yoko Ono, the Pretenders, Angelique Kidjo and Thievery Corporation.
Further contributors include Mark Farina, Rise Against, DJ Spooky with Lee "Scratch" Perry, Toots and the Maytals with Bunny Wailer, Kinky, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and a Danger Mouse/Murs collaboration. Tortoise, System Of A Down, Bad Religion, Jurassic 5, Gorillaz, Jill Scott and the X-ecutioners have donated previously released tracks.
All proceeds from the album will be donated to the United Nations Refuge Agency and UNICEF.
"We're trying to address two things with this CD," says Waxploitation CEO/album producer Jeff Antebi. "The first is to get the United Nations to declare the ongoing atrocities a genocide, so that real action can take effect to stop what is obviously an 'ethnic cleansing' taking place, in violation of the 1948 Geneva Convention. The second is to raise money for the dire relief situation affecting over 1 million innocent civilians who might die from starvation and disease if aid does not reach them right now."
Conflict began raging in Western Sudan in February 2003, after two rebel factions took up arms to protest alleged discrimination by the government in Khartoum. The United Nations estimates 50,000 deaths have resulted, while more than one million people have fled their homes for fear of attack.
