With Sister Hazel's Rock Boat '05 sailing officially canceled due to the after effects of Hurricane Katrina, organizers have instead pulled together a benefit concert this weekend in Atlanta. Elsewhere, Brian Wilson, Motley Crue and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington are among the latest to raise money for victims of the storm.
RELIEF CRUE: A new version of Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" recorded with Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington will raise funds for Mercy Corps and the American Red Cross .
Crue and Bennington taped a performance of the song on the morning of Sept. 10 for the MTV/VH1/CMT "ReAct Now" telethon at the CMT Studios. From there the artists joined a 26-member local gospel choir and a 25-piece orchestra at Music City's Oceanway Studios, where Desmond Child produced the new recording -- which was completed in time for Motley Crue's scheduled performance that night at nearby Starwood Amphitheater.
"Hopefully, people will embrace it in the way it was intended," Bennington says. "The song really does fit the sentiment and something special happened when we pulled it together. Everyone felt as if they were doing something really important."
Beginning today (Sept. 27), the track is available exclusively via Apple's iTunes music store, with a new video available for streaming via AOL Music . Other major download services will begin carrying the cut soon and a CD single release (with a making of" documentary included) is being planned for traditional retail outlets.
'BRIAN WILSON CALLING: For weeks, Wilson has been imploring visitors to his official Web site to "donate, donate, donate" to relief efforts. When a fan expressed doubt via the site's message board that the artist was truly behind the effort, he laid down a challenge, saying he would make a donation if the former Beach Boys leader called him.
Wilson not only made the call, but also further pledged that "for anyone who sends in a donation of $100.00 or more, I will call you personally and answer a question that you may have, or just say hello or whatever." The offer is open through Saturday (Oct. 1), through which time Wilson and his wife Melinda will also match all donations made through the site, regardless of the amount.
ROCK FOR RELIEF: Saturday's Oct. 1 Rock for Relief show at Atlanta's Earthlink Live & Vinyl will benefit Americares and PetsMart Charities animal relief fund. The show will be anchored by Sister Hazel, which was due to sail on Rock Boat '05, along with Theresa Andersson, Emerson Hart, Michael Tolcher, Gaelic Storm and others.
As previously reported , the latest Rock Boat was due to depart Thursday (Sept. 29) from New Orleans with Gavin DeGraw, O.A.R., Cowboy Mouth and Marc Broussard also on board. Passengers are being given the opportunity to transfer their booking the next planned sailing, which will leave Galveston, Texas, Jan. 14. More information can be found at RockBoat.com .
