Madonna 's new music video for "Give Me All Your Luvin'" features the Queen of Pop collaborating with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. for the first time, walking on the hands of football players for the first time (we assume), and, shockingly, unleashing her first cheerleader-laden music video. With Minaj and M.I.A. waving their pom-pons and rooting for Madonna as hard as anyone in the clip, the singer has put a special twist on the well-worn tradition of the cheerleader-led music video.
From helping deliver Toni Basil's signature pop chant to conveying My Chemical Romance's subversive vision, check out the usage of spirit squads in these five classic music clips. Where does "Give Me All Your Luvin'" rank alongside these videos?
TONI BASIL, "MICKEY"(1982)
One of the most memorable music videos of the 1980s is the most cheerleader-centric video of all time, with Basil leading her squad in the song's indelible militant hook. Three decades later, the six-person spectacle that begins at the 2:30 mark is still pretty mind-blowing.
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, "TEENAGERS"(2007)
Cheerleaders -- in gas masks? My Chemical Romance must be involved! The Jersey alt-rockers populated the video for their 2007 single with out-of-control teens and beautiful ladies who head-bang instead of root, root, root for the home team.
AVRIL LAVIGNE, "THE BEST DAMN THING" (2008)
A ragtag group of cheerers in pink help the Canadian singer strike a pose and spell out her first name. As badass as Lavigne looks in this clip, the cheerleader with the full-on mohawk has her beat in badassery by a country mile.
NIRVANA, "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" (1991)
Nirvana's iconic clip for "Teen Spirit" simply would not have been the same without the presence of the dispirited cheerleaders leading a loaded gymnasium in a dystopian pep rally. Even as the fire burns, they're still chugging along in the background -- albeit with some more suggestive dance moves than before.
GWEN STEFANI, "HOLLABACK GIRL" (2005)
If only EVERY group of cheerleaders got to yell the phrase "This shit is bananas! B-A-N-A-N-A-S!"on a regular basis. Maybe, someday, they will.
