"It's moving very fast," Polica frontwoman Channy Leaneagh said backstage at Billboard's SXSW showcase on Wednesday (March 14), shortly before the Minneapolis-based, R&B-influenced indie electro quartet took the stage opening for The-Dream and Lionel Richie.
"Very fast," however, is an understatement. "This time last year I was here [in Austin] with Gayngs and Polica was just a kind of a thought that me and [producer/collaborator] Ryan [Olson] were having and taking about," Leaneagh explains. Gayngs, the Olsen-led collective that notably includes Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), quickly inspired the formation of Polica. The new group, rounded out by Chris Bierdan, Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, were back in Austin recording a debut album by the summer of 2011. The resulting debut Feb. 2012 album, "Give You The Ghost," has already earned the band a robust following -- and a healthy slate of SXSW shows.
Backstage with Billboard at ACL Live Wednesday, Leaneagh chatted about the effects-drenched album, her SXSW plans, the band's origins, and more.
