To say that Katy Perry has had a rollercoaster year would be an understatement. Though the pop superstar has had great success on the Billboard charts and took home trophies at the Billboard Music Awards, People's Choice Awards and MuchMusic Awards this year, she also went through very public divorce proceedings with comedian Russell Brand. Her last video for the "Teenage Dream" era, "Wide Awake," reflects Perry's journey in a fairytale setting.
To tie in with her upcoming film, "Katy Perry: Part Of Me 3D," the video begins with Perry wrapping up filming for her first "Teenage Dream" single "California Gurls." As she goes into her dressing room and stares at the mirror, Perry is transported down a mystical path, blending elements of "Snow White" and "Alice in Wonderland."
After biting into a poisonous strawberry and meeting a young, innocent version of herself, Perry gets distracted by paparazzi reflected in a mirror at the end of a hallway. The floor cracks, so Perry and the young girl are transported to what appears to be a mental hospital. The little girl stomps, scares away the monsters, and frees Perry from her catatonic state.
The two then travel to a beautiful garden with a classically-handsome Prince Charming, who Perry promptly punches in the face. Though this video is rife with symbolism to match the song's straight-from-life lyrics, this part is clearly the most blunt. As the video ends, Perry and her younger self make their way back to the suburbs, where young Katheryn hops on her bike and rides back to her childhood. As for adult Katy -- she has to don an outrageous outfit and perform for a roaring crowd, but not before releasing a magical butterfly into the world.
"Wide Awake" became Perry's 11th single to hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it jumped 19-9 last week, with 402,000 downloads sold to date according to Nielsen SoundScan.
