"I grew up in Malaysia, and all the kids there, they love Incubus. And 'I Miss You' is kind of like one song everybody knows," said indie rock songstress Yuna, before launching into a cover of the band's late-'90s track. Even today, she still looks back on those little moments with "I Miss You" that influenced the big picture of her music career.
"When I listen to (I Miss You)," she continued, "I just remember the fun times and the moments I had with my bandmates who are like a really strong support system and a group of you know, amazing friends. I'm just really glad at the end of the day like I have them still, supporting me."
The 25-year-old vocalist said she grew up listening to singer-songwriters and groups like Fiona Apple and Incubus, all of whom inspired her own songwriting.
"Their songs are kind of like letters, like unsent letters, and just so simple and direct," she said. "And since I was listening to a lot of that kind of stuff, I think it has a lot to do with my songwriting. If you keep it simple, a lot of people can relate to your songs and they can connect, and can really feel what you feel."
Yuna also performed one of her own singles, "Live Your Life," for the Billboard Candid Covers session. She said of the song: "It's a cross between acoustic jazz, something I do really well, and then mashed up with Pharell's labor. And it's very cool kind of like laid-back lush pop and I'm just really happy that a lot of people can relate to such a positive pop song."
