On Tuesday (June 26), Kellie Pickler announced her partnership with ConAgra Foods Foundation®'s Hunger-Free Summer program at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. There, the country music star and other local volunteers filled boxes with canned goods and other food items to be delivered to many of the 400,000 children who are in need across Middle Tennessee alone.
The Hunger-Free Summer program invites everyone to download a free children's activity book, The Hunger Avengers, at Facebook.com/ConAgraFoods . For every download or "share," one meal will be donated to a child in need. Pickler, ConAgra Foods® Foundation and Feeding America hope to reach their goal of 500,000 meals provided by the swiftly approaching deadline of September 3, 2012.
Pickler says that being involved with the cause was a no-brainer. "It's shining a light on the ones that are not guaranteed a meal, and might not get a meal," she says. "People are always asking me how they can get involved. This is a way for them to do that, and they don't have to spend a dime. It just takes a few minutes out of your day. We've got a short time and a lot of food to get prepared. We need people to get involved."
Pickler was also shocked to know how much of an issue that hunger is our own backyard. "A lot of people think it's just the children in the third world countries that are not getting food, but that's not true. There are kids right here, as well. One in five children in the United States carry the burden of not knowing if they are going to get a meal. One in five children go to bed with no food in their stomachs. It's a big issue."
Fans can catch Pickler on the road talking about how to become a part of ConAgra Foods Foundation®'s Hunger-Free Summer program as well as supporting her third album, "100 Proof," which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 in January. Her next stop is in Milwaukee on Friday, June 29.
