Dennis Flemion, half of cult lo-fi duo the Frogs , has been missing since Saturday (July 7) when he went for a swim and failed to resurface during a family and friends boating trip in Racine County, Wis.
Milwaukee's NBC affiliate WTMJ reports that divers were searching the lake on Monday, amid complicated weather conditions, and that authorities believe Flemion drowned.
"We're doing what we can. Family needs closure, we need to be done," said Rob Robins of the Racine County dive team.
The 57-year-old Flemion and his brother Jimmy formed the Frogs in 1980. They mixed profane and irreverent comedy in their uncompromising, stereotype-skewering music, with song titles like "Which One of You Gave My Daughter the Dope?", "Grandma's Sitting in the Corner With a Penis in Her Hand…" and "Lesbian Kind of Morning."
The band's legend grew in the 1990s when they began releasing music on Matador Records, including "My Daughter the Broad" in 1996. Gerard Cosloy of Matador, who released the band's gay-themed "It's Only Right and Natural" on his Homestead imprint in 1989, wrote of the band's prolific nature in a blog post .
"With the possible exception of Bob Pollard [Guided By Voices], it's hard to think of anyone nearly as prolific as the Flemions, and you could certainly make a case for their catalog being every bit as impressive," he wrote, later adding, "The fantastic output and fleeting moments of near-fame aside, I hope he's remembered as a really sweet guy first, and a hugely talented artist second."
The Flemions never broke out commercially -- not surprising with their oft-DIY sound and penchant for shocking themes -- but major alternative acts took notice throughout the years, including early cheerleaders like Pearl Jam, with whom the Frogs toured in 1995, Nirvana and Beck.
In 1996, fan Billy Corgan hired Flemion to play keyboards on the Smashing Pumpkins' "Infinite Sadness" tour.
"I'm devastated by the loss of my friend Dennis Flemion," Billy Corgan wrote Monday on Twitter . "Words can't explain the sorrow. A tragic loss. Please pray for his family."
Last week, the Frogs released two albums digitally, "Squirrel Bunny Jupiter Deluxe" and "Count Yer Blessingsz."
