Friday Flashback: Please Don't Sing, Conway Twitty

Hello darlin' nice to see ya

For our Friday Flashback this week, we transport to 1969. One of country music's all-time greatest songs was recorded some 42 years ago today, but it nearly didn't happen quite like it did.

Conway Twitty had made a successful jump from rock to country in the mid-1960s, and had even topped the charts on a few occasions. He brought this song, which he had written a decade earlier -- and had been sitting in a shoebox -- to the legendary producer Owen Bradley. The intro was to be sung; at least that's how Twitty had written it. However, Bradley came up with the idea of speaking the intro, and the rest became one of the great lines in country music. Did it work? We'll let you be the judge!
