Friday Flashback: A Rare Kind of Hit for Dolly Parton

Submitted by admin on Fri, 2011-12-09 19:00

The music business is famous for many things, and irony is often among them.

Hank Williams -- long regarded as THE singer-songwriter in country music -- did not write the song that became his breakthrough, "Lovesick Blues." Willie Nelson has spent a decade in Nashville as a writer, and had been back in his native Texas for a few years before hitting with "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain," a Fred Rose-penned hit that Roy Acuff had achieved success with as his first number one.

And, for all of her classic songs as a writer, Dolly Parton's first million seller was not penned by the buxom beauty. Though Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann wrote "Here You Come Again," to say Parton made the song -- which topped the Hot Country Singles chart 34 years ago this week -- would be an understatement.
