T-Pain has teamed with iPhone, developer Smule and iTunes to create "I Am T-Pain," an iPhone app released today (Sept. 4) that lets users "Auto-Tune" their voice, among other capabilities.
"I came up with the idea like six months back when I saw other artists with applications at the App store on iPhones," T-Pain tells Billboard.com. "I was trying to figure out why I didn't have one yet, especially since I love the iPhone and am always buying applications. So I went to the applications people, got with Smule and told them we had to make an application that will blow all these other apps out the water. That's when we came up with the 'Auto-Tune' idea."
Adopting the same Auto-Tune voice/pitch correction technology used in recording studios, "I Am T-Pain" creates, in real-time, the vocal effects T-Pain has helped make popular in recent years. "It's actually the same software that I use in the studio, so if anybody actually wanted to be T-Pain, then there you go," he says.
The $2.99 app comes with five songs -- "Chopped & Screwed," "Bartender," "I'm Sprung," "Kiss Kiss" and "Dreamgirl" -- but users have the option to purchase other tracks, whether instrumentals or with lyrics. Some of the other songs available are "Can't Believe It," "Got Money," "Good Life," "Blame It" and "Low." The additional songs will cost $1.00 each or $1.99 for three. The app and extra tunes are available via the iTunes store.
"I Am T-Pain," which allows users to turn their phones into a mini-recording studio and a karaoke machine, also features a freestyle mode that lets them create their own songs, email the tracks to friends and to publish the work on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. "We're working on Twitter right now," T-Pain adds.
Sean Kingston, Bow Wow and Kid Cudi try out T-Pain's app.
