Heart Attack (3:32)
Producers: The Suspex
Writers: Mitch Allan, Jason Evigan, Sean Douglas, Nikki Williams, Aaron Phillips, Demi Lovato
"Give Your Heart a Break," Demi Lovato's 2012 hit that became biggest single to date, is an immaculate piece of pop songwriting that simultaneously demonstrates the former Disney star's striking vocal nuances; that last chorus, for instance, turns into a gut-punch simply because of the way Lovato sings the word "in." As the lead single to her next solo album, "Heart Attack's" arrangement narrowly misses the irresistible panache of its predecessor -- and yet, Lovato's performance is even more impressive on this new offering. Backed by the Suspex's crackling wall of percussion and a prodding guitar lick, Lovato allows her fully bloomed personality to carry the song, accenting syllables for added effect on the pre-chorus and belting the bridge without abandon. Lovato's transformation from brand-affiliated pop talent to a commanding vocal presence is reminiscent of Kelly Clarkson's breakout on "Breakaway," and even if this cardiovascular single is not as all-encompassing as her last one, it's a fantastic sign of what's in store for the 20-year-old.
