Prince, the first cover artist of the new Billboard magazine , may not be releasing a new album anytime soon, but the pop music legend has returned with a new track, "Screwdriver," that made its way online in the form of a lyric video on Tuesday (Jan. 22).
The amiable piece of jangle-pop allows the Purple One to fashion a hook out of the double entendre, "I'm you're driver, you're my screw." Elsewhere, a fierce guitar lick is given a few seconds to breathe, and a steady beat anchors the new track.
"Screw Driver" makes it way online soon after Billboard released its cover story on Prince and his future music plans. Although he dismissed the notion of a new album, his first since 2010's "20Ten," being released soon, he chalked that up to his lack of a major label.
"That kind of album talk always comes up when something leaks," Prince told Billboard senior editor Gail Mitchell. "But I don't do albums anymore -- I don't have a deal. I do songs."
On May 19, Prince will receive the Icon Award and perform at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. Joining past recipients Stevie Wonder and Neil Diamond, Prince says that he appreciates the recognition, but is ready for new music (like "Screwdriver") to make an impact. "I thank Billboard for giving me this honor. It's always nice to be recognized for what we've done here," he says. "But I'm all about moving forward."
