Consumers redeeming download gift cards received for Christmas are spurring huge increases for a variety of songs. Based on sales data from industry sources, Billboard forecasts that perhaps six songs could sell more than 300,000 downloads this week.
| 'X FACTOR' UPDATE: BRITNEY SPEARS' POSSIBLE EXIT ISN'T THE ONLY BIG CHANGE COMING: While it was posting wins in December, for its second season " The X Factor" was down 8% among adults 18 to 49 on Wednesdays and 7-10% on Thursdays in the same demo. Big changes are in store for the show's third season -- and not just the replacement of judges L.A. Reid and quite possibly Britney Spears, since sponsorships and the grand prize are also up in the air.

 UK RECORDS BIGGEST SINGLES WEEK SALES EVER: With consumers redeeming gift cards and acquiring digital downloads to secure musical content for mobile devices received as Christmas presents, singles sales in the UK reached an all-time high last week. Climbing 49.37% week-on-week to 5,696,413, they surpassed by 4.49% the previous high of 5,451,493 set exactly a year earlier. The week saw new highs for 77 chart positions.

'FISCAL CLIFF' DISPUTES REMAIN AS DEADLINE IS HOURS AWAY: The White House and Senate Republicans sorted through stubborn disputes over taxing the wealthy and cutting the budget to pay for Democratic spending proposals as Monday's midnight deadline for an accord avoiding the "fiscal cliff" drew to within hours. Unless an agreement is reached and approved by Congress by the start of New Year's Day, more than $500 billion in 2013 tax increases will begin to take effect and $109 billion will be carved from defense and domestic programs. Economists warn that if tax hikes and budget cuts are allowed to fully take hold, their combined impact - the so-called fiscal cliff - would rekindle a recession.
