Herbie Hancock will be honored by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, for his contributions to the genre and the music industry, with an all-star tribute concert October 28 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.
The tribute concert -- which will include performances from Sting, Joni Mitchell, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau and Chris Botti among others -- is a part of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition, which showcases young talent competing for a series of scholarships.
The competition takes place Oct. 27 on the campus of University of California of Los Angeles, and the top three finalists will square off the following night at the Kodak Theater, just prior to the kick-off of the tribute concert.
The competition winner takes home a $20,000 scholarship, the second place finalist receives a $10,000 scholarship and the third receives a scholarship for $5,000. The judges for the competition include Quincy Jones, Herb Alpert, Terence Blanchard, Hugh Masekela, Clark Terry and Roy Hargrove.
The competition and the tribute concert will air on BET. No date has been set.
