Grammy- and Latin Grammy-winning funk-rock fusionists Ozomatli are the new morning show hosts at Los Angeles alternative rock radio station 98.7 FM (KYSR).
"The Ozomatli Morning Show" debuts Aug. 20 on the Clear Channel station, whose signal reaches Los Angeles and Orange counties. Since January, Ozomatli has hosted a local Saturday night program on 98.7 called "Ozo-Local."
In a statement, Michael Martin, programming VP at Clear Channel Los Angeles, said the decision to hire Ozomatli as morning hosts was "based on the sound, flow and compelling local content of the Saturday night show, and the spirit Ozomatli has as a group."
"They are not trying to be disc-jockeys," Martin added. "Given their lifestyle, and perspective on community, music, pop culture and politics, 98.7 listeners are in for one heck of a morning show."
KYSR ranked 19th in the L.A. market among listeners 12 and over, according to Arbitron's spring 2008 book. Ozomatli's latest album, 2007's "Don't Mess With the Dragon," has sold 47,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
