Edge Performance VCT is backing the opera production "Monkey: Journey to the West," created by Gorillaz collaborators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett and Chinese director Chen Shi-Zheng, as it prepares for a 31-date run at London's O2 arena.
The London-based venture capital trust has invested £1 million ($1.64 million) in a new live promotion company created by music industry entrepreneur Daniel Lycett, Saravid Promotions. Lycett is a former managing director of German independent edel Records in the U.K. and, since 2004, a consultant to acts including Wu Tang Clan.
This is Edge's third investment from its VCT C share pool, following two consecutive £1 million investments to events company MK Ultrasound Limited.
"'Monkey' is a truly spectacular show and a fantastic project with which to begin our relationship with Daniel and Saravid," said Edge Group founder David Glick in a statement.
"Monkey" has already received critical acclaim during sold out runs in Manchester, Paris and London's Royal Opera House. The BBC has also made extensive use of its music and visuals during the 2008 Beijing Olympics coverage.
The production will play in a 2,000-seat marquee at the O2 from Nov. 8. "Monkey: Journey to the West" is out now in the U.K. through XL Recordings.
