EMI Music has appointed Shabs Jobanputra to the position of president of Virgin Records U.K. He will report to Nick Gatfield, EMI's president of new music for North America and the U.K./Ireland.
Jobanputra was the co-founder and managing director of EMI's joint venture label Relentless, which began as an independent in 1999. He has worked with acts including Daniel Bedingfield, So Solid Crew and - since Relentless came under the EMI fold in 2003 - Joss Stone, K.T. Tunstall, Seth Lakeman and Cage the Elephant.
"Shabs has got the drive and ambition to ensure Virgin becomes a leading home for U.K. talent," said Gatfield in a statement. "His ability to identify and develop artists across all genres makes him the ideal candidate for the role."
Relentless is now part of Virgin Records U.K and artists on the EMI frontline label include Robbie Williams, Massive Attack, K.T. Tunstall, Corinne Bailey Rae, Doves, Starsailor, the Kooks and Jamie T. International acts include Katy Perry, 30 Seconds To Mars, Lenny Kravitz, Hockey and Empire Of The Sun.
One of the first deals made following Jobanputra's appointment is a worldwide partnership with deadmau5, the producer and electronic artist. Virgin and deadmau5 will work together on all live, recording, sponsorship, television, film and merchandising activities.
The electronic artist recently won the award for best breakthrough DJ at the Miami Winter Music Conference.
